Dubai: Cities Within A City

From the top of the world’s tallest tower Burj Dubai the view will encompass a theme park twice the size of Disney, as well as three man-made, palm tree-shaped offshore islands, with 300 more islands forming the shape of the world. Backed by a new transport system and self-contained ‘cities’, these are just some of the projects that are making the emirate one of the world’s most innovative and progressive destinations.

Dubai Festival City – www.dubaifestivalcity.com
The 1,600 acre waterfront project on the banks of the Creek will include the largest concentration of hotel and recreational facilities in the Middle East. Opening in phases until 2013, its landmark features will include five hotels and Festival Village. The 18-hole Al Badia golf course designed by master golf course designer Robert Trent Jones II has already opened. Also opened this year is Dubai Festival Waterfront Centre, which brings together an unsurpassed selection of eateries and a rich entertainment experience all within an architectural masterpiece. It features 550 shops, including 20 anchor stores, 90 restaurants, cafés and bistros, a 12-screen cinema, and a vast entertainment centre.

Dubailand – www.dubailand.ae
One of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken; this £3 billion mixed use mega-theme park will contain 45 major projects and over 200 smaller tourism, leisure and entertainment attractions when fully completed by 2018. It will be twice the size of Florida’s Walt Disney World Resort, with unique and imaginative entertainment parks. An environment-based programme entitled Astrolab will entertain adults and children alike with technologically advanced games, while the Falcon City of Wonders will recreate famous buildings such as the Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

The largest cruise ship afloat, Desert Pearl, will be anchored at a dedicated oasis as the centrepiece of the theme park Aqua Dunya, which will have 36 wet and dry rides and attractions, plus three exotic adventure islands. In addition, there will be one of the world’s largest malls, The Mall of Arabia, the Flea Market, and Formula One World planned as part of Motor City, a showcase for Dubai’s bid to host Formula One races.

Dubailand also has plans to create an indoor ski slope called the ‘'Dubai Snow Dome”. This 1.4 million square metre attraction will form a key part of the overall vision for Dubailand, and will include a revolving ski slope, artificial mountain range, ice bridge, cable lift, snow maze, ice slides and cold water aquaria.

All these attractions can literally be found on your doorstep at Dubailand, the first phase of which includes an Autodrome, the Polo & Equestrian Club and Al Sahra Desert Resort. Dubailand is to be home to the Bawadi project, the largest concentration of leading hotels in the world, some 10km long with no less than 51 hotels and a total of 60,000 rooms.

Dubai Sports City – www.dubaisportscity.ae
Dubai Sports City, part of Dubailand, will be the world’s only integrated purpose-built sports venue. The £2 billion city will be home to a range of internationally recognised sporting academies, offering customised training courses, with the best coaches and programmes to ever come together in one location. These include the first Manchester United Soccer School outside of Europe, a David Lloyd Tennis Academy, the International Cricket Council’s own Global Cricket Academy, and the first Butch Harmon School of Golf outside of the United States. Other facilities featured in this project include a multi-functional state-of-the-art gymnasium, an olympic-size swimming pool, a sports rehabilitation centre and accommodation facilities.

Dubai Sports City will be located on 50 million square feet of land within the Dubailand development. It will feature four magnificent stadia, which will host top-tier athletes from around the globe: a 60,000 seat multi-purpose outdoor stadium, a 25,000 capacity cricket stadium, a 10,000 seat multi-purpose indoor arena and a field hockey venue for 5,000 spectators.

The project will also be home to the first Ernie Els designed golf course in the Middle East: an 18-hole championship course named The Dunes, which will be the centrepiece of a luxury golf residential community called Victory Heights in 2008. The Dunes is a links-style course combined with traditional design and is the championship golfer’s first project in the Middle East.

The first phase of Sports City, which will include the golf course, sports academies and other facilities will be completed by early 2008, with the entire development set for completion by 2010.

Dubai Marina
This Jumeirah based residential project will be able to accommodate 150,000 people when it is full opened. It will include an 11 kilometre promenade with exclusive boutiques and restaurants, gardens, sports facilities and a 700-berth marina. International City – www.internationalcity.ae
This internationally themed residential, commercial and tourist complex will be divided into six key areas: Central District, Dubai Gates, The Dragon Mart, Residential District, Lake District and The Forbidden City. Due to be completed by 2010, it will cover 800 hectares.

The World – www.theworld.ae
Almost 300 man-made islands will be built to resemble the shape of the world. Private owners or developers will build a mixture of residential homes, apartments, resorts, restaurants and retail outlets in this marina environment. Access to the islands, together which measure nine kilometres long and seven kilometres wide and are due to be completed between 2008 and the end of 2010, will be by boat or helicopter.

Dubai World Central – www.dubaiworldcentral.net
The £4.6 billion Dubai World Central project, part of the 140 square kilometre multi-phase development of residential, leisure and commercial projects centred around the largest airport development in the world. Dubai World Central International Airport (JXB) will provide six runways, two terminal buildings, six concourses, and a network of underground automated movers for 12 million tonnes of cargo and 120 million passengers a year; almost twice the size of Heathrow which currently carries 67.7 million passengers per year.

Dubai Exhibition City – www.dwtc.com
Exhibition City will enhance Dubai’s reputation as the region’s premier destination in the meetings, conference, incentive and exhibition sector (MICE). The three million square metre site will include 19 exhibition halls, conference halls and service facilities, alongside hotels, restaurants, and residential apartments. The first phase of the project is due to be completed in 2009.

Motor City - www.motorcity.ae
Dubai Autodrome is the region's first fully integrated motorsports facility. The complex, a part of the Union Properties Motor City development, not only includes an FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) sanctioned 5.39 kilometre circuit, which offers six different configurations, but also a Race & Driving school and a karting track. Dubai Autodrome opened in October 2004 when it hosted the final round of the FIA GTC (Grand Touring Cars) Championship. The facility is designed to accommodate all types of motorsports events from world-class to local. It also has the capacity for concerts, corporate events, conferences, seminars, or motoring exhibitions.
